THE funeral of John Connelly, one of the greatest footballers St Helens has ever produced, will take place next Monday.

England international John, a winger who starred with Burnley and Manchester United in the 1960s, had been battling bone cancer.

He died peacefully last week at his home in Barrowford, Lancashire.

Originally from Clock Face, the former St Helens Town player was also a member of England’s 1966 squad, for which he was belatedly given a winners’ medal in 2009.

A service will be held at St Mary’s Church, Yorkshire Street, Burnley, at 10am, before a private burial in Barrowford.

His funeral cortege will pass Turf Moor, at 9.45am, where fans can pay their final respects.

This must be the same Connelly that played for St Helens Schoolboys in the early fifties. Should I say is it? Because I also played on the same team. Either way I'm sorry to hear of his passing.
