Chariots of mire

St Helens Scouts slug it out in the chariot race at Bispham Hall. St Helens Scouts slug it out in the chariot race at Bispham Hall.

OUR scouts love nothing more than hurtling round a muddy track in home-made carts.

And that’s just what they got when they took part in the annual Scout Chariot race at Bispham Hall Scout camp site near Billinge.

Teams from Scout Groups across St Helens battled with 60 competitors from around the north of England, to see who could be the fastest around the gruelling 1000 metre course of mud, scramble nets, mazes and a muddy pond!

Luckily the heavy rain of recent weeks had a break over the weekend and the teams enjoyed two days of glorious sunshine, however the saturated ground made the going very muddy and energy sapping.

The highest placed St Helens team came from the 8th Sutton Parish Scout Group who were placed a fantastic third overall with a fast time of 9 minutes 27 seconds.
