10:00am Thursday 22nd May 2008

A ST HELENS man has been arrested in Thailand in connection with the trafficking of women to England for the sex slave industry.

Ex-police officer Ian Shuttleworth (42), is being investigated over allegations Thai women have been to London under false pretences, promising them jobs in restaurants.

It has been reported that Shuttleworth, who owns a company which provides bodyguards for high profile Thai VIPs, was arrested after raids in London, in which a number of women were found to have been forced into prostitution.

No charges have yet been made by police. A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police said: "We can confirm that the man arrested was the subject of the Met's Human Trafficing Teams investigation that began earlier this year."
