THE first task of a newly formed St Helens Council planning committee will be to consider applications for a new Saints stadium and interlinked developments this evening (Tuesday).

The committee was re-drawn following local elections earlier this month and now consists of seven Labour councillors, six Lib Dems and two Conservatives.

The key changes have seen the Tories take on an extra seat from the Lib Dems, while Councillor David Crowther takes on the position of committee chairman from party colleague Richard Ferry.

Labour councillors are Keith Deakin, Mike Doyle, Tom Hargreaves,Linda Maloney, Pat Martinez-Williams, Joe Pearson and Richard Ward.

Representing the Lib Dems are David Crowther (chair of the committee), Richard Ferry, Janet Hennessy, Ken Knowles, Geoffrey Pearl and Stephen Topping, while John Parr and Ken Roughley are the Tory members.

They will be considering applications for a 17,980 capacity stadium and Tesco supermarket on the former United Glass site at Peasley Cross, the redevelopment of the current Tesco store for alternative retail use and the creation of 192 homes at Saints' current Knowsley Road ground.

If the plans are approved locally they will be referred to the Government Office of the North West which has 21 days to decide whether the scheme should be called in for a public inquiry.

The Government Office does have powers to set down a holding direction if it needs longer than 21 days to make a decision.

  • The planning meeting is scheduled to begin at 5.30pm in room 10 at St Helens Town Hall.

The plans have been passed subject to a risk assessment being undertaken on the gasometer and maintaining the archeological aspects of site, eg the bottle shop. Any suggestions where the money could come from for this??

I, for one, am not saying "sod local heritage." I am a member of several local history groups. I am saying WHO has maintained this ancient monument because it is actually a local ruin. I appreciate that it should be maintained. However, was it not the responsibility of the previous owners of this land to maintain it also. It has been left to deteriorate over the years, therefore, my argument, therefore, is that the previous owners should be responsible for it's lack of upkeep and should be made responsible financially responsible for it's retrospective upkeep.
