FRED Freke's a real stalwart of of St Helens and District Rambling Club, and when Fred celebrated his 85th birthday on the club's Sunday outing at Kendal, he was presented with a chocolate cake and a card signed by the members out walking that day.

Fred is the oldest actively participating member of the club, which he joined in 1978, and still enjoys the fortnightly club rambles. He served as club chairman for three years, from 1994 to 1997, and was for many years a regular walks organiser and walks leader. He used to enjoy tougher climbs on the range of routes offered, but now prefers the easier six or seven-mile strolls with a tea shop or two on the way.

Fred says: "Walking helps to keep me fit and gets me out into the countryside. That goes for youngsters too. There were three out that day and they all enjoyed it. There's something for everyone in the club, whatever their age and ability."

  • St Helens and District Rambling Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and welcomes new members. For full details contact the club secretary, John Dyson on 0151 493 1266.
