UNSUNG contractors who worked on the new and improved St Helens Central railway station landed a prestigious infrastructure prize last week at the North West Construction Awards.

Engineers from C Spencer Ltd were saluted for their work on the £6million rebuild of the old Shaw Street station at a glitzy awards ceremony in Liverpool.

The futuristic Pilkington glass-fronted building, described by backers as an iconic gateway to the town', was also saluted for its innovative design.

Opened last September, the new station was designed to complement the neighbouring George Street conservation area and blend in seamlessly with its surroundings.

Among the features is a 39-tonne steel-clad copper footbridge, which enables passengers to safely and easily cross the line.

A 120-space park and ride, including dedicated bays for blue badge holders, has also been completed on the site of the former station building.

The awards, organised by the regional Centre for Construction Innovation (CCI), saw 14 other North West building firms win much-coveted prizes.

All the winners now go forward to a national final, which is due to take place in November.

CCI's Chief Executive, Andrew Thomas, said: "The projects that won are a testament to the North West's construction industry. Enormous credit must go to them.

"It was a hard fought competition and the many excellent submissions made the judges' jobs very difficult."

It failed to meet the deadline for completion and when it did open, the lifts didn't work for months afterwards....and for that they get an award !! No wonder this country is a laughing stock.
