SAINTS fans are joining the ranks for a march up to Knowsley Road this Saturday demanding a new stadium.

Fans are being encouraged to arrive at Victoria Square, outside St Helens Town Hall, at about 3.30pm before a red and white army begins a march to Knowsley Road ahead of the evening home fixture against Catalans Dragons.

A number of events are planned both inside and outside the ground in a bid to fuel further backing for a development that is said to be critical for Saints' long-term Super League future.

Dave Dooley (58), secretary of the Independent Saints Supporters Association said: "We want to show the strength of feeling for this new stadium and set out to councillors that the project has the backing of the community. We're hoping a minimum of 1,000 will take part."

Key players behind the stadium believe the weight of public support could influence whether decision makers give the plans the nod at local and national level.

It is believed Saints chairman Eamonn McManus and chief executive Tony Colquitt may join the crowds for the march, along with the town's politicians.

Even if councillors make a resolution to grant approval on Tuesday, there are further hurdles to overcome before the stadium gets the green light.

Councillors will consider three planning applications, which seek permission to: Create a Tesco Extra supermarket alongside a stadium at the former United Glass site at Peasley Cross; the redevelopment of the current Tesco at Chalon Way for alternative retail use; build homes on Knowsley Road.

The failure of any of the applications to secure approval would scupper the financial package and result in the collapse of the three projects.

Even if the committee grant planning permission, the developments will be referred to the Government Office for the North West.

Civil Servants will then aim to decide within 21-days whether a public inquiry should be held into the plans or if the council's resolution can stand.

If an inquiry is called, the Planning Inspectorate will examine the applications before making a recommendation to Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, who would have the final say. This process could take 12 months.

This stadium is not a MUST. Rugby will continue to be played in St Helens.
Knowsley Road itself is a dreadful road to drive down (parked cars and bollards everywhere). More houses will make it worse. So, why not build the stadium (if you must have one) on the former Triplex site. This weeks the ground in that area, no need for another supermarket, and at least the traffic generated, will not be any worse than we have right now. There - wasnt that easy

My point is, the population of St Helens is about 200,000 people, 1000 marchers = .05% of the population, in a denocracy that means nothing, it also means that 99.05% of the townsfolk are not interested.

FRankie is obviously a opie-eater or Morrisons boot boy.

I canvassed in the town centre last saurday and received fanyastci positive response from match-goers and townsfolk. The town is behind this as they know the status of the town is closely linked with the fortune of the Saints.

Any right thinking person would see the fantastic long term benefits to the St Helens.

Now Freddie crawl back under your stone.

Oh dear Arthur, no I am not a opie eater whatever they are nor am I a Morrisons boot boy although as a family we do shop at Morrisons for conveniance and not for some political reason, as for the status of the town being linked to the rugby team I have never read such rubbish sre you saying the town would close without the rugby, I don't think so. The number of active Saints supporters ie. those who go through the turnstiles are a minority of the population of the town, fans and armchair supporters may shout a bit but contribute nothing to the upkeep of the team, the true figure of supporters is about 60% of the people who go through the turnstiles the other 40% are away supporters, so remember you are in the minority of the population of the town. As for Freddie crawling back under his stone, who's he?
