Man who nailed himself to post freed by hacksaw

A PROTESTER who nailed himself to a signpost outside a town centre church has been handed a fixed penalty notice for causing a disorder.

The emergency services were called out to the St Thomas C of E Church, Westfield Street, shortly after midday on Saturday (May 3).

Firefighters used a hacksaw to extricate the 32-year-old man from a wooden post.

The man was taken to Whiston Hospital under a police escort and was later handed a fixed penalty fine.

If he's claiming benefits or something then it should be stopped! That will teach him not to do stupid things.

How would stopping his benefit or handing him a fixed penalty notice teach him a lesson ? here's a guy who is probably not the sharpest tool in the shed, self inflicted physical injury does'nt concern him (who know's what he may be capable of doing to someone else) but you think the threat of stopping his benifit will leave him shakeing in his boot's not to mention solve his problems, prevent a re-occurance and put him on the straight and narrow. I'am a strong beleiver that we are living in a nanny state today mostly due to arrogant and ignorant attitudes in society but also partly due to an ineffective and inadequate judicial system which does'nt prevent or act as a deterrant to anti social activity and criminal attitudes.

You say that we live in a nanny state? With comment’s of ‘‘here's a guy who is probably not the sharpest tool in the shed’’ and the comment didn’t get taken off the site or complained about, then you can say that we live in nanny state, I don’t think we are there YET!! I think that we live in a society were there are no family values, where people are better off living on the state! And your opinion if the guy is or probably not the sharpest tool in the shed, it wouldn’t surprise me that’s he’s on benefits, that’s why it should be stopped! And the fixed fine, well he deserves it! The time of day was midday on a Saturday (when he nailed himself to the post)? Hhhmmm, I think there would be a lot of people in town! I think a lot of people would find that disturbing, there would have been a lot of young children/ people about who will now grow up with that disturbing encounter! Which we don’t need in this town or society,

regards

Your quite right James, this would have been a disturbing encounter to witness for anybody, our society and town can well do without but my point was how would a fine or stopping benifts (no idea if this guy is actualy claiming benefit in the first place) prevent or deter this individual from harming himself or others ? My apoligies if any offence was taken for comments of the shed etc, It was not intended to offend but I have an habit of telling it how I feel it is. This guy is obviously not of sound mind as he is a danger to himself and possibly others and I can't see how fineing him or stopping his benefit would make our society a safer place.

I’m not offended! You’ve just got to be careful, what you say on these pages, people today get offended TOO EASILY! It’s political correctness gone mad (I blame the U.S for compensation culture and the E.U for all the silly rules) anyway ‘‘kv, St h’’ I’m glad you come on here, we need more people like you to come on here and say it how it is, there aren’t many people left who do. And it’s makes a good debate!
