Variety is the spice of life at Hale One Act

THE Hale One Act Festival got off to an impressive start with Our War, a touching and warmly funny wartime drama from Yolanda George.

Apparently, Yolanda was only 16 when she wrote this piece and the writing had a maturity and a flair that gives the distinct impression there’s much more to come from this talented teenager’s pen.

The actors from Altrincham Youth Theatre certainly did justice to an impressive script and evidently enjoyed every minute of their time on stage.

Next it was the turn of AYT’s juniors with the vampire spoof Garlic and Lavender by Nick Warburton. While the production boasted some skilled performances, thiis was one of those youth plays that tries too hard to be funny.

But it was the grown ups who served up the best profuction of the evening, in the shape of Mission Impossible by David Muncaster. Performed by The Margs, it featured members of staff from a struggling travel agents.

incarcerated in an airless meeting room, a group of dis-interested staff are forced to devise a “mission statement” for the ailing firm. The air was thick with company jargon to make you wince and home truths aimed at the office “jobsworth.”

When the prizes are handed out at the Club Theatre on Saturday this production will surely be among the winners.
