Garrick season ends on a high - fabulous Aida
WE’RE less than half way through 2012 and I think I’ve already seen the amateur musical of the year.
In fact, Aida, Altrincham Garrick’s final production of the season is, for my money, their best show to date.
Thanks to the expert direction of Mark Goggins and the natural talent of the leads, several of the principals wouldn’t sound out of place on a professional stage.
Letitia George, who plays the title role, has a singing voice that can only be described as sensational and she’s also a very fine actress. There’s a strong chemistry between her and Dan Booth (Radames) and his future as a performer looks as bright as the Egyptian sun. When this tale of forbidden love reaches its strangely haunting climax you just might find a lump in your throat. This is quite an achievement as composers Elton John and Tim Rice resist the temptation to play on the audience’s emotions throughout. As for the score, it is packed with good quality numbers and a largely young and vibrant cast conquer any vocal challenges it throws up with consumate ease.
Stephanie Niland gives her best performance at this theatre to date as Amneris, the princess with a first class degree in vanity. Steph too has a singing voice of a professional standard. Make sure they’re turning them away at the box office. A fabulous achievement. * Until May 26. The box office is on 0161 928 1677. Star rating - *****
