South Bronx, New York, 1977. The city is not in good shape, but the people seem in good spirits – judging by the new trailer for The Get Down, anyway.
Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious period drama follows a group of teenagers existing during the dawn of hip hop and disco in the city, who “make a pact that becomes bigger than all of them and changes their lives – and the world – forever”.
That is a Nas track you can hear in the trailer, an exclusive one too. The NY native executive-produced the series, which – strangely by Netflix’s standards – will be released in two instalments.
From those 30 seconds it’s difficult to work out exactly what the “pact” the teenagers will make is, but the show will definitely revolve around new musical beginnings – as can be seen in the first trailer released in January.
The Get Down is due for release on August 12.
