The Great British Bake Off is about to hit our screens again, and we can’t wait for all the baking intrigues. Like these five scandalous moments from previous series…

1. The famous “bin-cident”

This disaster is also known as Baked Alaska-gate, on account of the Baked Alaska which ended up – you guessed it – in the bin.

Iain Watters was horrified when he discovered that his frozen dessert had been removed from the freezer by fellow contestant Diana Beard, who claimed it was her chiller space.

Like the poor Baked Alaska, which sat sadly dripping on a kitchen counter in a mess of meringue and chocolate, Iain went into meltdown. The bearded baker dumped his creation in the bin, and stormed out of the Bake Off tent for a sulk on a nearby hill.

At the end of the disastrous challenge, he had to physically present his bin to Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry as his submission, and sadly exited the competition.

Viewers were enraged when Diana shrugged, “He’s got his own freezer, hasn’t he?” with more than 500 complaints to the BBC and a dedicated hashtag, #JusticeForIain. The grandmother subsequently left the show due to “illness”, but she has never been forgiven by Bake Off fans.

2. The salt and sugar mix-up

Poor John Whaite experienced every baker’s nightmare in series 3, when he accidentally used salt when making his rum babas… instead of sugar. Paul Hollywood actually spat out the over-salted creation, warning fellow judge Mary not to even try it. Mortifying.

Luckily for John, he scraped through to the next week and went on to win 2010′s competition.

3. Squirrel nuts

It was columnist and Twitter big-dog Caitlin Moran who spotted it first. A shot of a squirrel included in series 2 in 2011 had exceptionally large testicles.

“I’ve just seen a preview tape of tomorrow’s Great British Bake Off,” she tweeted. “And 41 minutes in, there’s a shot of a squirrel with ENORMOUS testicles.”

Word spread, and soon the squirrel became the real star of the episode – and a Bake Off legend.

4. Accusations of scandalous flirting

2013′s Ruby Tandoh, with her model looks and stress-induced tears, received flak from viewers for supposedly flirting with Paul.

She later came out as gay, tweeting: “p.s. for those who thought I fancied Paul Hollywood or that I’d ever bang him to get ahead, the jokes on you, you massive s******* misogynists.”

5. The great custard theft of 2013

Custard-gate was less rage-inducing than the bin-cident, because the culprit was so very upset about what she’d done.

In series 4, the bakers were making trifle when Howard Middleton noticed his custard had gone missing from the fridge. Unfortunately, fellow baker Deborah Manger had accidentally used Howard’s custard. She gave him hers in return – but what a to-do! How were the judges to determine whose was the best custard?

Ultimately, Paul and Mary decided to try the custards separately, and Deborah was the one to leave the competition.

What scandals and controversies do 2015′s contestants have in store for us? You never know what will happen in the world of competitive baking…
