Katy Perry has said fans will Roar for her Super Bowl half-time performance.

The singer and ex-wife of comedian Russell Brand said her appearance on Sunday would include “a lion and sharks”, teasing: “It’s going to be wild out there.”

Katy, 30, said she feels blessed to perform on the Super Bowl stage “at such a young age”. She added that she had enjoyed past performances from Beyonce and Madonna, and what she would be adding is “some light-heartedness”.

Katy, who will be joined by Lenny Kravitz at the NFL football spectacular at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona, said her performance would also include an “old school” woman singer who would be instantly familiar.

“When you hear the first ring of the chord, I think jaws will drop and faces will melt,” she said.

Later, a person familiar with the plans for the half-time show said the surprise guest would be Grammy winner Missy Elliott, who was featured on a remix of Katy’s song Last Friday Night (TGIF).

The audience can expect to hear two of Katy’s hits, Roar and Firework. Her performance would be a visual feast in the tradition of Madonna and celebrate “female empowerment”, she said.

One element of the show, she said, is the unfurling of a giant screen that will go on the field for visual effects and she will also change her outfit several times.

Katy said she would be rooting for the Seattle Seahawks, who are taking on the New England Patriots, because she had taken health advice from Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

She is good friends with Russell and her tour had put her in good physical shape for Sunday’s performance, she said.

“I think that we’re all athletes out there on the field,” she added. “We’re all very athletic in the show. We’re really prepared.”
