George Clooney and new wife Amal Alamuddin have had a second opportunity to say "I do" when they celebrated a civil ceremony in Venice.

The couple, who tied the knot on Saturday (September 27) in a private ceremony at the Aman Grand Canale attended by Hollywood celebrity friends and family, followed up with a required civil procedure before Italian authorities today (September 29).

The newlyweds arrived at the historic Cavalli Palace along Venice's Grand Canal by water taxi.

The Oscar-winning actor looked dapper in grey suit and matching tie, while the bride wore a cream-coloured, short-sleeved jacket with palazzo pants and a matching wide-brimmed hat. They turned to wave at hundreds of people waiting hours for their arrival.

George ushered his wife inside, and they emerged 20 minutes later with former Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni, who performed both ceremonies.

The couple have been continuing their wedding celebrations with two lavish meals in Venice. They entertained guests at a lunch that a source told E! News was "super chilled without anyone overdoing it", and on Sunday night (September 28), the newlyweds invited 100 of their friends and family to join them for dinner at the exclusive Granaries Of The Republic.

People reported that the eatery at the Belmond Hotel Cipriani was decorated in red, with velvet pillows and vases filled with feathers and apples.

Meanwhile, more details have been emerging of the couple's picturesque ceremony in the romantic Italian city.

Amal, 36, is said to have worn a stunning Oscar de la Renta dress to marry George, 53, but so far no official photos from the nuptials have emerged.

Security was said to have been tight and guests were apparently asked not to bring phones or tablets with them to help avoid any snaps being leaked.

Us Weekly said the Hollywood star and the human rights lawyer exchanged vows underneath an arch of white roses and that they said vows they had written themselves.

An insider said: "Clooney held Amal's hand when saying part of his vows."

After they were named man and wife, the couple and their wedding party - which included stars such as Bill Murray, Bono, Cindy Crawford, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon - enjoyed speeches over a meal which included lobster, sea bass and beef.

They were entertained by a string orchestra while they ate.
