THE Citadel is set to light some starry candles as the team there celebrate its 21st birthday!
In the coming months our local arts centre will invite big names from comedy, theatre and music and the very best homegrown talent to join in the party.
And what a way to start the anniversary as legendary singer/songwriter Midge Ure is set to perform at the Citadel next Friday, August 28, doors open at 8pm, tickets are £15/£13. Tickets are available online at citadel.org.uk or from the Citadel Box Office on 01744 735436.
He’s widely recognised as a ‘Musician's Musician’. His songs Vienna, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, If I Was and Do They Know It's Christmas show him to be a songwriter with few peers.
His renditions of these songs, as well as his impressive interpretation of No Regrets, demonstrates that he is also one of the UK's finest vocalists.
And then how about this for a superb autumn at The Citadel... there’s the Brit award winning Finley Quaye, Edgar Jones’ Freepeace returning after touring with Oasis, Squeeze frontman Glenn Tilbrook, plus an acoustic performance by Mark Morriss of The Bluetones.
The wide-ranging music programme continues with Blues bands, Eddie and the Hotrods, Nine Below Zero, Danny Bryant’s Redeye Band and The Animals and Friends.
Folk fans have a number of great gigs to get excited about with, An Evening with PJ and Peggy, from Show of Hands the Phil Beer Band, the compelling Eliza Carthy, and the up and coming Wirral band Elbow Jane.
For those who prefer Country music, there’s Tex-Mex outfit Los Pacaminos featuring Paul Young, you can definitely count on this being a great night out!
Also joining the Citadel line up are some of the very best tribute bands like Think Floyd, The Clone Roses and Desperado.
The Citadel team continue to showcase the very best artistic talent on our doorstep with St Helens Born and Bred, Good Times and Rubberneck. Plus the now legendary local lads The Lancashire Hotpots return in March.
Once again the Hands On @ The Citadel team present another fabulous Community Christmas Pantomime, adapted from the story by Hans Christian Anderson, The Snow Queen is a good versus evil magical adventure all the family will enjoy.
And there’s an invitation to join in the celebrations of the Citadel’s achievements over the last 21 years at their 21st Birthday Open Day on Saturday, November 14.
Fay Lamb, Citadel Chief Executive said: “I’m really looking forward to the season ahead as we have some absolute gems!
“My personal favourites are Mark Morris of the Bluetones doing a cracking acoustic set and Paul Young’s Los Pacaminos, I love a bit of country! I’m excited to see The Animals and Edgar Jones as I’ve never seen either live before and I’m also really looking forward to Eliza Carthy and Glenn Tilbrook as I haven’t seen them at the Citadel for years.
I always love the Panto too as it is such great fun and hopefully there’s something for everyone in the 21st birthday season.”
