I TOOK some took time out last weekend to catch some live music in a few of our town's venues.

First up was a visit to the Zoo Bar to see Ian McNabb and St Helens' own Les Glover. I could go on about how good this show was, it was probably one of the best "unplugged" shows I've seen in a very long time. Icicle Works front man McNabb played a brilliant set of material from both his solo career and his era with the legendary Liverpool band.

It was also the first time I've seen Les Glover live and I was blown away. A great set, aided and abetted by Henry Priestman (of The Christians) on cajon, percussion and vocals.

Les played songs from new album "The Love Terrorist" and he really is a great singer songwriter. His songs stick in your

mind to the point you find yourself subconsciously humming the tunes many days after. A big shout out to

Paul Griffiths of the Zoo for bringing a show of this calibre.

On Saturday I ventured to relatively new venue, The Lounge Bar, Bridge Street. It's a venue that's gone under a few names over the years but this reincarnation of the bar has seen the light and presents live music on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Last weekend they featured local covers band Dreamfeeder. A great set of tunes from the lads Eddie, Lee and John and favourite for me was Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" which I've never heard any covers play before.

Dreamfeeder are around local venues quite often and if you get the chance well worth catching.

Rounding off the weekend I popped into Tank on Westfield Street for the monthly "Jazzed Up" open mic.

House band were Greg Davies, Vint Wilcock and Danny Wellens and it was another outstanding evening of jazz standards mixed with tunes you would not normally associate with the genre.

The open mic section featured a few of our local musicians having a go at material they wouldn't normally be playing,

and surprisingly doing it very well. Even the Tank commander himself, Ian Whittaker, joined in the proceedings with a version of Muddy Waters' "Hootchie Coochie Man".
