Hi again, Simon T back with all that's happening "Live in Glasstown".
Loads happened last weekend and, as promised, I was out and about checking out some great gigs in St Helens last Friday and Saturday.
I paid a visit to the Zoo Bar on Westfield Street to catch The Wizzards of Twiddly and the two man Captain Beefheart tribute, Old Farts at Play. Two man Captain Beefheart tribute? Impossible, I hear you cry! But no... Consisting of Steve Byatt, currently with local AC/DC tribute band, Ace/Dc on guitar and Eric Burke from local favourites The Swampstompers on vocals and harmonica. If you've ever listened to any Captain Beefheart stuff you'll know that there is quite a lot going on and howjust two people could manage to play the good Captain's material is a bit of a head scratcher. But thanks to modern technology and skillful musicianship The Old Farts at play managed to and it would have made the Captain smile!
Also on Friday evening I headed over to The Rendezvous to catch three quarters of The Swampstompers trying a new approach with a set of Rory Gallagher material rather than the usual rock/blues they are usually known for. Fronted for this evening by guitarist Barry Dooley the band played a great set with a totally different feel from their usual material and great vocals from Barry too!
Saturday I paid a visit to the Phoenix to catch The Jalapenos. Having seen the band on many occasions in the past it was great to see them back in St Helens with their good time, old fashioned rock n' roll and a touch of blues. As usual the band was on fire and attracted a large audience to one of St Helens newer venues, The Phoenix and a great evening was had by all.
