TENOR Tom Loughlin was among the young stars that lit up the Theatre Royal on the opening night of a special production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

The Phoenix Youth Theatre brought their production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s for three nights, starting on Wednesday, September 10.

The performance follows on from the resounding success of last year’s award-winning Phantom of the Opera production.

Updating the story into a modern setting, the show offers a novel representation of the famous rock opera musical which first hit the stage in 1970.

And, while it may take a few scenes for the audience to acquaint themselves with this alternative offering, the show offers a powerful depiction of ‘the greatest story ever told.’ This is especially the case in the second half as the show moves towards its striking climax.

Sam Rughoo stars as Jesus with Andy Lee giving a boisterous performance as the tragic Judas Iscariot.

Meanwhile, Farron Ronan offers a moving depiction of Mary Magdalene in the female lead with Tom Loughlin providing excellent support as Simon.

The show features many of the original titles including Heaven on Their Minds, Gethsemane and I Don’t Know How To Love Him and the eponymous Jesus Christ Superstar.

Award winning director Danny Watkins returned to head the production with Nicole Fagan leading the intricate choreography which features throughout.

Jesus Christ Superstar shows at the Theatre Royal from September 10 to 12 at 7.30pm on each evening.
