VOCALIST Ruby Turner is set to light up the Citadel for the first time when she comes to perform in the town next month, as part of a tour with her four-piece band.

The Jamaican-born singer, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the music industry, has experienced working with some of the biggest names in the business, including Mick Jagger, UB40, and Brian Ferry.

She also recently toured across Europe with Jools Holland in 2013.

“Working with all of these people has been a highlight but I remember one time I was in a studio giving it large and then I noticed Mick Jagger on the other side of the glass and had to hold my nerve!” said Ruby, 55.

“I’ve had the great pleasure of working with some great people in my career.”

However, she enjoys the intimacy of the smaller venues just as much and is looking forward to her Citadel debut.

“It will be my first time at the Citadel, although I also have a theatre background and love the smaller venues,” said Ruby.

“The performances do have to be adapted for more intimate venues. I won’t say it doesn’t faze me at all but I am able to adapt and absolutely love it.

“The show will include a good variety from my early hits to my recent gospel album. It’s a fairly wonderful mixture of gospel, R & B and blues. I love music and have no preferences for any genre, I enjoy them all,” she added.

Ruby, who released her vintage Gospel album I’m Travelling On, in 2009, has worked with her four-piece band for more than three decades and still loves performing with them.

“They’re great. It’s always been really good working with them which I have for the past 35 years.”

Ruby has also had an acting career, appearing briefly in hit film Love Actually, as well as appearing in TV shows Little Britain Abroad.

Ruby arrives at the Citadel on Saturday, May 3 with the doors open at 7.30pm. To book, contact the box office on 01744 735436 or visit citadel.org.uk.
