SMASH hit musical Sister Act is coming to town next week bringing gospel music, 70s feel good disco tunes and hilarious comedy to the St Helens Theatre Royal stage.

Based on the 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, the show from Thursday, October 12 to Saturday, October 14, will feature all the favourite songs and funky fun that made people fall in love with the disco diva Deloris Van Cartier.

Brought to the stage by the Pilkington Musical Theatre Company, this heart-warming tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music should have everyone dancing in the aisles.

Sister Act tells the story of Deloris, a nightclub singer whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder and has to hide in a convent and pretend to be a nun under protective custody.

While there she manages to help her fellow ‘sisters’ find their voices and unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

Simon Foster, who can usually be found strutting the stage as St Helens’ resident Panto Dame, will be directing this feel-good comedy.

He said: “In the last couple of years, we’ve been able to show St Helens theatregoers just how good an amateur show can be.

“Sister Act is a brilliant feel-good musical, full of comedy and music which will have audiences boogying along in their seats.”

The lead role will be taken by Emma Dears who has also starred as the lead in top productions such as Annie, where she was the youngest to have played this role professionally. She also starred in Boogie Nights with Shane Ritchie. Her other roles include Carmen in Fame and Mary Magdalene in Bill Kenwright’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

She added: “It’s been a real pleasure working alongside the people at Pilks, we have such fun and the show has a huge feel good factor.

“If you want to be thoroughly entertained you have to come and watch!”

The show will have four performances at 7.30pm, with a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday.

Tickets costing £13.50 for adults, £12 for children and £45 for family ticket can be purchased from the St Helens Box Office on 01744 756000 or online at sthelenstheatreroyal.ticketsolve.com/shows.
