MEN are invited to tune up their singing voices to take part in public performances inspired by the story of First World War conscientious objector Ernest Everett.

Composer Verity Standen is working in partnership with the Heart of Glass and Situations to host the event which will see audiences explore locations around the George Street Quarter as voices resonate around the area.

Called Refrain, the show is inspired by St Helens school teacher, Ernest Everett, who was arrested because of his refusal to undertake combative service in 1916. He was court-martialled and sentenced to two years hard labour, the first conscientious objector to receive such a sentence.

Men are wanted to perform in the event. No experience is necessary and Verity is running taster sessions in the town centre for those interested.

On April 11 and 12 there will be taster open evening workshops to drop in and find out more about the project.

Meanwhile, April 29 and 30 will be rehearsal weekend to start learning the music and May 13 and 14 will be a rehearsal weekend for practicing the music.

From May 16 to 18 there will be rehearsal evenings, including dress rehearsals. The public performances take place across the weekend of Friday, May 19 to Sunday 21.

Performers will need to attend one of the taster sessions and the majority of rehearsals and be available for most performances.

To register interest email Suzanne@heartofglass.org.uk and include your name, where you are based, and any singing experience you have, even if it’s none.
