Hi folks, here yet again bringing you all that's "Live in Glasstown". Yet another weekend of live music is upon us and there is indeed some great live music out there.
The Mad Hatters continue their successful open mic night this Thursday at the Lounge Bar on Bridge Street. The man behind the Mad Hatters, Greg Davies, has run many similar evenings over the past 20 years starting off with The old Flex bar back in 1995.
The night moved around a number of venues over that time including the late, lamented Bell and Barrell, The Rifle, The Travellers Rest, Zoo Bar, The Royal Tavern and finally ended at the Rendezvous.
Greg has been a massive influence on a lot of the town's guitarists both old and young and has always encouraged any new players to get up and have a go regardless of experience.
He also toured with PJ Proby, Wayne Fontana, Herman’s Hermits and other numerous surviving 60's legends making quite a name for himself as a professional guitarist.
PJ Proby himself gave Greg the nickname "Bogey" after the Humphrey Bogart-type hat Greg still wears to this day.
Sadly a couple of years back Greg became very ill and virtually disappeared from the live music scene until last year when, after lengthy hospital stays and major surgery, his health returned and has re-established himself on the local live music scene.
A few months ago Greg decided it was time to bring back the open mic night and with the help of Phil Mawdsley, who he had been working within the local duo, Hatrick, and Paul Carney from the Lazzy Band on drums.
They called themselves The Mad Hatters and the Mad Hatters open mic night was born. The night has moved, due to circumstances beyond control from the Brasserie Chalon to the Lounge Bar on Bridge street and the night runs every Thursday from 9pm until late.
It's great to see Greg back out there presenting an open mic again in his inimitable style and always makes sure everyone gets a fair turn onstage and encourages musicians of all levels to get up, face an audience and enjoy playing music.
The Mad Hatters' open mic night runs every week from 9pm, Thursdays at the Lounge, Bridge street, St Helens.
