A YOUNG actor is looking forward to a hometown return to star in a production of 39 Steps coming to the Theatre Royal.

Former De La Salle and Cowley sixth form student Tom Platt will take on the lead role of Richard Hannay in an adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s film classic.

Tom, 22, who went on to study at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London has gone on to work in the West End and is involved with company Mischief Theatre working in production.

Tom made his West End debut in 2013 in the Olivier Award winning 'The Play That Went Wrong' in Trafalgar Studios.

Tom, from Thatto Heath, who now lives in London, has helped produce shows at the Theatre Royal in the past with the Phoenix Youth Music Theatre and is looking forward to being back at his hometown venue.

“I love that connection and having been involved with the theatre,” says Tom, currently on a UK tour of the smash hit 'Peter Pan Goes Wrong.’

“It is close to my heart to keep theatre in St Helens going. It’s a shame people in St Helens don’t get the chance to watch as much theatre. It is great to give people the opportunity and get involved.

“I’ve still got family in St Helens and they’ll be seeing me in July. It will be great to have a bit of fun.

“39 Steps has run for about 10 years in the West End and it’s a fantastic comedy and something that St Helens audiences will love. It’s short and packs a punch.”

The show will also feature ex-De La Salle pupil Ben Engelen, star of Bouncers and The Ciggy Run at the theatre, Kathryn Chambers and former Cowley student Harry Moore.

39 Steps will be performed at the Theatre Royal on Monday, July 27 at 8pm and Tuesday, July 28 at 3pm and 7.30pm. All seats are £10 and available from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 01744 756000.
