HELLO again.
Simon here with your guide to whats been happening on the local St Helens music scene and what’s coming up, live music wise, over the next week in the borough of St Helens.
Last Saturday I took a trip to a couple of local venues and caught two very diverse musical happenings.
The first part of my evening took me to one of the newer venues in St Helens, The Phoenix, in Canal Street, who were playing host to local blues-rock legends The Swampstompers. Possibly the longest surviving band on the St Helens scene, 2016 will see their 30th anniversary, good going in anyone’s books! As usual The Swampstompers presented their brand of blues and blues/rock to an enthusiastic audience in a venue that hasn't been presenting live rock music for very long, but is fast becoming a firm favourite with local music fans.
From the Phoenix I took a walk over to the Rendezvous on Church street to see "one puff and a piano", a show completely different from the electric rock and blues of The Swampstompers. Presented by Scott Crawford, and his piano, this was more of a chilled out, almost unplugged, session, with Scott playing music from Elton John, Don McClean, Eric clapton, some songs from major musical stage shows and classic Disney films.
A set very contrasting in styles throughout and joined on acoustic guitar by his brother, and compatriot from local band Papa Legba, Alan Crawford.
Again, two very diverse and enjoyable gigs showing once again that St Helens has so much to see and enjoy every week. Speaking of every week heres whats happening "Live in Glasstown" this coming week.
