Stadium 'will herald new era for club and town'

WITH a planning hearing for a new Saints stadium just days away, Eamonn McManus (seen left) has reiterated that the £25m venue would act as a catalyst for the town's regeneration as well as safeguarding the club's future.

Approval of the stadium plans and associated developments by St Helens Council's planning committee would not give an immediate green light to the venture because the applications would still have to be scrutinsed by government officers.

But a yes' from councillors would be a major plus in turning the dream of a new stadium on the former United Glass site at Peasley Cross into reality.

McManus, the Saints chairman, told the Star this week: "A positive outcome to the planning hearing will herald a new era not just for the rugby club but most importantly for the town.

"It will bring significant inward investment of many years from which the town will benefit enormously. I would particularly like to single out the efforts of the borough council who have been so supportive of the overall project and who have so thoroughly and meticulously processed the complex and detailed planning application over the last year."

McManus, said the club is "overwhelmed by public support for the stadium", adding: "I am particularly pleased that the major financial investment made by the club and developer Langtree in the stadium and by the borough council in its surrounding infrastructure will not just provide the club and its supporters with a deserved new stadium, which will ensure the club's long-term future, but will more importantly form the cornerstone of major long-term regeneration of the town."

Well stated Phil, it seems you and I are part of the silent majority, the few who shout the loudest are the only one's being heard, McManus and co have selective hearing.

silent majority? have you taken a poll on that by any chance? We know how many people have registered their support for the stadium, i've yet to see anything other than a handful of misery guts whinge about the plans for a new stadium. You do realise that the best rugby league club in the country are the last to get a stadium befitting their status? You have to wonder how towns like Warrington,Wigan,Lei
gh,
Huddersfield,Hull,Wi
dnes
etc can manage a new 21st century stadium but the best club can't. Part of the reason is we have the country's worst council (4 stars you're having a laugh)but we also have a higher percentage of backward anti progression Neanderthals in our town who can't stand the thought of anything new or modern being built in our town.Look at the fuss over any art projects, any development, any chance of new jobs and now the stadium. The fact is this town doesn't deserve a club like Saints, Saints are a super league success in a town populated by a too high percentage of embittered losers. We'll get a new stadium, then you can whinge about the next big development to come around.

I have not said that I don't want Saints to have a new stadium believs me living where I live I cannot wait for it to happen so I am not a prisoner in my home on match days and not being able to get my vehicle in or out of my own drive, please don't use the Saints were there before you cliche as it does not wash with me. My point is that no proof has been shown that the majority of the towns population are in favour of it as far as I read it is a handfull of Saints diehards doing all the shouting, also if Saints are so great how come they cannot afford to build their own stadium, as a business if they are not solvent they should be wound up.

Having lived overseas for more than 25 years I find the opposition to the new stadium frankly unbelievable. The town has an iconic team and 100s of derelict acres within spitting distance of a town centre that's never recovered from the disasters of 1960s and 70s town planning.
Get on with it andget it built.

Frankie Flintstone says "don't use the stadium was here before you argument." When you bought your house did you not notice the stadium?
It is more than a handful of fans who want this stadium, it is all the fans, 8550 who turn up weekin week out, the opposition fans who refuse to come because of the state of the ground. The other 20,000 people in the town who come to the challenge cup final each year, would probably make more of an effort to come if there were decent facilities. The children of this town need people to look up to sportsmen who are accessible, most of the schools in this town get regular vistits from the team encouragement with playing and coaching. My son loves rugby, he goes to all the Saints matches, he also loves football, we have never taken him to a football match, Why? we couldn't afford to do this it is far to expensive, it is difficult to get tickets, and far too many football prima donna superstars. No, give me an honest game of rugby league, reasonable prices, players who don't think that they are God. St Helens has little left to be proud of, shops that are closed and boarded up. Companies that have been taken over and closed down by foreign multi nationals.
ST Helens Rlfc actually want to stay in this town, be part of this town. Lets keep them.

Susan. I am pleased that you and your family enjoy rugby and can understand your desire for a new stadium but your comment did you not notice the stadium when you bought your does not wash with me, I like frankieflintstone live in the area close to the ground and whem I bought my house 1n 1959 the parking was not a problem, the road where I live has 232 properties and when I moved here there were 5 cars in the whole of the road and I did not have one of them, the fans either walked, cycled or used the bus and believe me there were many more fans then than there are now, I know you may find this hard to believe but door to door car service and children who cannot walk more than a few paces is a recent development in the country not just in St Helens. Saints do need a stadium but in my eyes there is not enough visable support of people who care the few hundred who marched should have been a few thousand but maybe they would have had to miss the FA Cup Final on television to take part. The old comment the ground was here before you is true but also remember that the town was here before the rugby and should the rugby fail do you think that the town would dissapear? if you or anyone else think that the they are delusional.
I sincerely hope that the new stadium happens but the average gate of 10000 spectators does in no way reflect a majority view of the number of residents in the town.
