EILEEN Cope of Thatto Heath was the first to get in touch.
Lindon Leigh from Eldon Street got the year right.
“This week’s photo is the Town Hall fire on June 9, 1913” Phil Leach correctly added “I believe that we are looking at the Town Hall from Victoria Square. To my knowledge the original Town Hall building burned down in 1871 and was replaced by the current building when it was completed in 1876.
“Several years after the new building's official opening, it was also damaged by fire. It happened when workmen were cleaning the building in readiness for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.
“Fire broke out on the spire of the building, which it is believed was ignited by the workmen's blow torches. The spire crashed down from the main tower through the roof of the Council Chamber, causing much damage. The spire was never replaced.”
