Time to start planning town’s big anniversary

WE are now only eight years away from celebrating the Town’s 150th birthday.

Before then we were the four townships of Eccleston, Parr, Sutton, and Windle, and since then we have grown to more than 50 square miles and are becoming one of the largest towns in the country.

When we celebrated our Centenary, a previous administration’s legacy was the Town Show (still going as a Town Festival) and, er, Century House. I am sure we want to do more this time.

So, now is the time for every group, committee and organisation to review their plans, goals, ambitions and strategies, for some now need to be kicked off soon if they are to be in place in 2018, for example re-opening stretches of the Sankey Canal, or making the most of Earlestown Town Hall, or public art and heritage trails to maximise tourist numbers, or enhancing our reputation for cultural events.

As you may know, I am also Secretary of St Helens Community Empowerment Network.

CEN’s “Imagine St Helens” project is taking a lead by inviting all Star readers to send us your thoughts, suggestions, and ideas, no matter how minor, as to what changes or improvements you would like to see in place in eight years time.

These could be just in your street or neighbourhood or in a wider area.

Ideas and opinions are not limited. They may be for a particular age group, or for a change in a procedure, or identifying something that could be improved for the better. There is no deadline.

Thoughts, suggestions and ideas as to how to make things better are always welcome.
