Hotel survived until 1880s

LOCAL archaeologist Bill Highcock, who lives in Crank, answered a query I put to him about another question that I couldn’t answer. Was there ever a hotel in Crank?...

“This is the first building you come to on the right hand side, as you approach the hill along Crank Road coming from town.

This group of buildings are mid- Victorian and came with the railway and station. The hotel, regarded by most locals as just a pub, lasted to the mid 1880s when the Pilkington families moved into the adjacent properties of Rainford Hall and later Fairfield.

The hotel was later bought and closed down so I'm told by the Pilkingtons, and resold later as a residence, on the understanding that it would never reopen as a pub.”
