Kay Leatherbarrow writes to me: “I read Geoff Sandford's report on Bellerophon making an appearance in Cranford.
The minute it appeared on screen I cried out ‘It's Bellerophon!’. When I was a girl living on Church Road,Haydock I used to see this locomotive nearly every day as she chugged her way across the level crossing situated where Church Road merged with Clipsley Lane, now the site of the Tesco roundabout.
“Many's the time when I would be late for school, the then Haydock Secondary Modern, and the crossing gates would close and we would have to wait whilst Bellerophon made her way across.
“We would then have to use the subway by the George V Park Gates. The subway no longer exists, having been filled in some years ago after the railway track was demolished.
“I am so pleased that he brought Bellerophon to the attention of Star Readers.
“Was I the only Haydock old timer to notice this wonderful locomotive, a true historical native of Haydock.”
