THESE throwback pictures of going to the circle in The Savoy and stepping inside the Curzon in Earlestown have brought back a flood of celluloid memories.

I enjoy going around community groups giving talks about the old cinemas in the borough, of which there were quite a few.

Often members of the audience will respond with their memories of the matinees we enjoyed as kids.

I thought it may be fun to watch on DVD many of the old B-movie westerns and serials of the time. Could they be any worse than Saturday prime time television.

I started with three Gene Autry and three Roy Rogers. They were great fun and the quality was better than expected.

On their way from the USA are Hopalong Cassidy, Lash Larue, Wild Bill Elliot, Randolph Scott and early John Wayne riding the sagebrush trails.

An extra bonus are sidekicks like Gabby Hayes and Smiley Burnette to raise a smile.

A real treat was to find an original Rin Tin Tin from 1923 (not one of his Hollywood descendants) and one of his serials.

I had already started collecting cult series like Undersea Kingdom, King of the Rocketmen, Phantom Empire, Flash Gordon and Superman v Atom Man. My wish list is ever expansing.

Some friends suggested it would be fun to organise some matinee screenings. Let me know what you think. My apologies for those who turned up for the Laurel and Hardy show in February. We were double booked and the others were first in. It is being rearranged.
