RON Hoofe also had a question over this old photo of Burtons in the town centre.
He said: "Was this building on the corner of Naylor Street as it was only given as being in Church Street?"
Regarding the location of the old Burtons' shop I didn't really know the town centre until after the arcades were built. Mary Presland's excellent book on St Helens has a map of the town centre showing both Market Street and Naylor Street joining Church Street.
I searched the local history and archives web page but there wasn't enough information to nail it as Naylor Street. I Googled it and found this entry from 2006.
"That building was on the left hand corner at the bottom of Hardshaw Street and is the Nationwide Building Society. On the right hand corner is Barclay's Bank. Crossing over Church Street on the corner of Naylor Street was the Midland Bank. On the other corner of Naylor Street was Burtons.
"An interesting fact about Martins Bank is 2 Hardshaw Street which was there at the time when the original town hall was in existence."
