I KNEW the picture a couple of weeks ago was of a trolley bus turnaround but I couldn't be sure where. Thanks to all those who put me right.

Fred Fitter said: "It is a temporary terminus at Prescot. Prior to replacing all the trolley buses in 2917 they re-configured the overhead wires from Nutgrove to Prescot so a trial service could be evaluated. The terminus at Prescot shows a turn round loop in Warrington Road at the junction of Eccleston Street and Wycherley Street.

"The trolley buses still ran in the background from the St Helens Road junction.

"The trolley bus to the right of the picture would be waiting to leave for Rainhill. BICC at Prescot would have supplied all the overhead line fitting and assisted the Tramway Transport engineers with the upgrades to Trolley Bus twin wires."

Alan Higham chipped in: "The large building with the side advert is the Kings Arms which was demolished in the 70s as it was structurally unsafe and replaced by the Fusilier on the same site. The 'new building' is now Prescot Town Hall.

"All the other buildings in shot are still there although a sign of the times is the one on the extreme left, which is actually the very top of Eccleston Street,

is now a Chinese Restaurant."

Ron Hoofe contributed: "I don't remember the trolley buses in Prescot. The reason the picture is familiar is that I used to work on the buses for St Helens Corporation and subsequent companies from 1966 to 2006.

"I started as a conductor and went on to be a driver. In the early days the buses only went to Prescot on the 7, 8 and 9 service, known as the Prescot Circle. The number 7 left St Helens, went to Toll Bar and into town.

"The 8 did the reverse route. The 9 went to Thatto Heath, Rainhill, Whiston to Prescot and back the same way. The turnaround at Prescot was up to the Kings Arms, right, then right again coming out on Warrington Road up the street on your photo where the shop blinds are, then turn left outside the Reform Club."
