ALMOST every music fan will have paid a visit to Darwin's Music Shop on George Street.

I was sent a note from Peter who said: "My partner Julia Cadman brought your article about the Clubmen, which featured in the Star, to my attention. Well, there were just three members of this trio. The leader was Dennis Knight on guitar and vocals. Ron Colville was on string bass and Frank Darwin on drums.

"To add some interest Frank Darwin was my uncle and was the youngest brother of my father George Darwin. Dennis played a four string tenor guitar, which was quite rare in those days."

Another member of the family, Steve Darwin, added: "In response to your item in the Star spotted by my wife, my dad Frank Darwin was the drummer in the Clubmen.

"But as my brother David and I well remember there were just three members. Dennis Knight played ukelele, guitar and banjo. Ronnie Colvill on double bass and my dad Frank on drums. However it is possible that my uncle George may have joined them on piano or sax if the venue wanted a four piece band.

"There is quite a lot I can tell you but the main thing you were asking for was a photo. Somewhere in the family photos we had a picture of them all. I have asked my sister to dig them out of her loft.

"Incidentally my uncle George was very well known in St Helens as he had a number of music shops in the town and I remember well as a kid being taken along with our David.

"One shop was opposite the Hippodrome, a second was the shop on George Street, which still exists and the third was The Record Lounge on Duke Street. There was a big music stall in the old glass roofed permanent market which was in the square."
