A WHILE back I included a mystery picture of some old gates which left a few of you scratching your heads.

Terry Broughton got in touch to say: "I'm as flummoxed by that picture of those gates as anyone. The more I look at it the more I'm convinced it can't be the gates in Victoria Park.

"I fully respect that 90-year-old gentleman's recollections of the gates but memory can play strange tricks on you when you look back on things and what you thought you saw isn't what the scene looked like at all.

"Something else that strikes me is that the path appears to fall away from the entrance and Victoria Park rises. Where did the original picture come from and do you have a higher resolution image available?" (I don't know and no).

He continued: "I've done what I can in Photoshop and the buildings that are revealed in the background behind the railings could even be a chapel of some sort and there is definitely another building extending from the back of the lodge house too.

"I've tried flipping the photo horizontally as well to see if that makes any difference. It's not unknown for photos to get printed the wrong way round. It's like looking in a mirror which can sometimes give a whole new perspective on something.

"Without more info I fear we may never find out where it was taken. here's hoping someone somewhere eventually comes up with the answer."

But QPK19 stated: "As I wrote a few months ago these were in Bishop Road almost opposite Windlehurst Avenue where I lived in the 1940s. The bigger photo was in Cowley Hill near the Maternity Hospital."

Mrs Wilson from Cherry Tree Lane in Moss Bank wrote: "Compare this stone against the photo you recently printed. You will find it is one of the tops off the original posts. The other gates are in Cowley Hill Lane."

I am not convinced, like Terry.
