MARLENE Downey dropped me a line to tell me the event to remember Norman Sutton, who was killed in the Battle of Britain, went very well.

She said: "The event, organised bt The Friends of St Helens Cemetery was attended by the deputy mayor David Banks and deputy mayoress Jeanette Banks, relatives of Pilot Officer Sutton and Reverend Canon David Eastwood from St Helens Parish Church. "Also author and historian Adrian Cork, RAF representatives from 611 Squadron, and from RAFA Royal British Legion, Air Force cadets, Sonia Neighbour bereavements officer for St Helens Cemetery and members of the public.

"The headstone was unveiled by the deputy mayor and Bill Gabbott, the nephew of Norman Sutton. It was a beautiful autumn day and was close to the date almost 75 years to the day that Pilot Officer Sutton was killed (October 5 1940).

"The renovation of the grave had been organised by Adrian Cork who had researched Norman Sutton's life and death as a Battle of Britain pilot.

"At the ceremony Adrian read out the last letter Norman had sent to his family before he was killed."
