BACK in my column on July 23 I wrote: "With regard to the picture we published on July 2, where are we, there have been no responses."

Well we went from one extreme to another with an avalanche of correct answers this time. Many thanks to all of you who took the trouble to contact me. Quite why I didn't work out where it was at the time is a mystery to me. Little grey cells can do that.

It's taken from the town hall square. The road on the left is Barrow Street. The Prudential building on the left is still there and is a great building to look at. The triangular building is also still there and at the time was the Cotham Arms.

Indeed in the early 80s I joined a local arts network and we held our meetings in there. It was my introduction to the local arts scene long before the Citadel opened and before the council appointed arts officers.

The road on the right is Cotham Street which leads to Sefton Place. You can see a tram or trolley bus mast but no wires. Behind it you can see Beecham's tower. The buildings on the extreme right have gone probably around the time they moved Queen Victoria's statue.

The buildings further down were demolished for another building, which is likely never to be listed, Wilkinsons.

I had wondered what the occasion was. Many said it was the royal visit of the Queen and Prince Phillip in the early 50s. I managed to find this photo of them bothe on the St Helens Connect site.
