SUE Smith wrote about this photo on Facebook: “It’s the Mill House in Mill Lane, Sutton. This is taken about 1921 and the couple are my grandparents William (Billy) and Gladys Lawrence when they took over the tenancy after they were married. I was born there just over 30 years later.”
Jack Gartside added: “Used to be one of the best singing nights in the late 50s.”
When I arrived in Sutton in the late 70s, I got a part-time job serving behind the bar there several nights a week.
It helped me get to know some of the people in the area.
At that time it was four separate rooms: the bar, the snug, the central area by the counter and the juke box room.
People told me that in the era before the juke box, there was a piano for singalongs and it was particularly popular with the Americans who travelled over from Burtonwood.
