THE story of Joseph Crooks prompted one reader to write to me about her own family history.

Anne Adams commented: "I was interested to read the article regarding the Gallipoli survivor Joseph Crooks. While researching my family tree I found details of a great uncle Private Samuel Finney 12533 who also served with the 6th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment and left Avonmouth on board the Ausonia in mid June 1915 arriving in Gallipoli on July 1.

"Sadly he was reported missing in action on August 10 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles memorial. His name also appears on the St Helens Roll of Honour and on the WWI memorial plaque in St Peter's Church in Parr.

"He died aged 30 and I can find no record of him being married or having children but he is forgotten. We will remember them."
