IN keeping with our theme of looking back on school days from bygone times, here is a picture that has been sent to me by Coffey Time reader Terence Preston.

It shows a ‘team photo’ of Rivington Road teachers. He can list most of their names or nicknames.

Terence writes: “On the back row is ‘Humbug Yates’, Mr T Owen, R Jones, Peter Jones, R Owen, Don Gullick, Mr Tabern, Ken Tranter and Ronnie..?

“Front row: is: Mr Trelawny, Mr Bates, Pop Philips, Mr James (head master) J.T. Jones, Mr Wolf, but I have forgotten the name of this one."

Don Gullick was the school’s games master and played was playing for the Saints at the time. Terence adds that Mr Tabern later became a vicar, adds Terence.

If you want to share any memories then drop Coffey Time a line. You can also send me copies of any school pictures.

Meanwhile, there is great news for anyone thinking of starting a small community group meeting somewhere, such as local heritage, arts and sports.

As part of the School Access project there is now a clear understanding of the availability of facilities to hire on school sites. All secondary schools in St Helens now offer access to their facilities during evening and weekend times. The types of facilities available to hire include sports halls, activity halls, gymnasium, climbing wall, dance studio, drama theatre, and classrooms and so on.

The opening times, range of facilities and hire charges vary from school to school. If you are interested contact Allison Lewis on 01744 675401 or email allisonlewis@sthelens.gov.uk In the past I have mentioned that the proceeds of Eric Guest’s book, available in Wardleworths, are going towards establishing a local police museum.

Should you be interested or able to assist their project, please contact John Russell, Secretary, the National Retired Police Officers Association (St Helens Branch), 8 Rectory Close, Winwick, Cheshire, WA2 8LD. Phone 01925 241538.
