BRIAN Orrell has written to Coffey Time in response to the locomotive ‘Vulcan’ that featured in this column on July 17.
Brian, an ex VF loco design department worker, tells me it is really Vulcan Works Loco PAX (works number 3272) in disguise.
He wrote: “It was one of three locomotives built for stock purposes and later retained for use at the foundry.
“In 1955 it was altered on the instructions of a manger, with changes including a larger capacity saddle tan. The existing stove pipe chimney was replaced by one of the ‘Barsi Light Railway’ pattern and a cast nameplate from an earlier works loco (number 1828 of 1902 was fitted).
“The rebuilt Loco – under the name Vulcan – was on duty within the works until 1961. It was placed on static display on Vulcan sports field. To prevent inquisitive fingers being hurt all the moving parts in the cab were welded shut.”
