RAINFORD'S Roots team of volunteers has been busy washing, sorting and bagging finds from the four community excavations in the village.

Project officer Sam Rowe has sorted and identified over 8,500 clay tobacco pipe stems and bowl fragments and is identifying the wealth of pottery uncovered (see www.rainfordsroots.com for updates).

Over 50 people attended an open day at the library where the team demonstrated how these historic finds are labelled and how copies of the stamp markings on clay tobacco pipes are taken label finds and how to take transfers of clay tobacco pipe stamps.

On Saturday, August 2 between 10 and 4pm an Elizabethan craft day is being held at Rainford Village Hall which will present people with an opportunity to make candles, weave baskets and see demonstrations.
