THE photograph printed two weeks ago brought a great response. Lots of you contacted me with the correct answer, and I enjoyed chatting on the phone.

Pauline Partington contacted me by email to say: “I am 60 years old now and left my mum’s home in 1971 when I got married. My nanny lived in Windle City, I walked past this row of houses and church at the top of North Road many times in the 60s and 70s as I worked at John Blundell as a clerk, based then in Windle Street. Happy Memories.”

Councillor Geoff Almond was also correct. He wrote: “Your most recent puzzler is the top of North Road. The church is St Mark’s and what was the Vicarage next door are now flats.

“I remember the chimney being built at the Cowley Hill works as I lived in Friar Street then in Windle City. I'm always disappointed when I drive up North Road now to see that the church clock no longer works.”

Albert Scott wrote: “I was a choirboy there 60 years ago when Paddy Evans was organist and headmaster at nearby Windle C of E primary school.”

Kevin Heneghan contacted me with some interesting information about that North Road scene: “The house in the photograph with the high gable, mansard roof and dormer window is where my family went to live in June, 1966.

"Next door, at the end of the terrace, is my neighbour and friend Noel Thompson. About 20 feet beyond is St Mark’s Vicarage, now converted into apartments.

"Number 156 was built, I believe, in 1902 for Mr Frodsham, a local solicitor, and the architect was a Mr Hartley.”
