YEARS ago I caught a train to Manchester Victoria, and a tram to Salford in snow and ice, tough going on my own in a wheelchair, but I was determined to see an exhibition concerning animals caught up in war on display at the Imperial War Museum North.

At our 13th annual Heritage Network exhibition the role of horses in the first world war will be revealed but it will be extended to other animals if there is an interesting tale to relate. Such as how a young Rin Tin Tin was found on a battlefield by an American soldier and taken to the USA where he became a mega movie star.

This should make a fascinating talk to give to community groups, and head me away for a while from purely local history, although local stories will be welcome.

Star readers can help by pointing me in the direction of any stories of animals caught up in World War One, that you see on TV or hear on the radio, or come across on the internet, books or newspapers.
