I was 13 years old and my Nana Coffey gave me a record token as a present. I could get my first full price LP! This was pre Beatles and pre Radio One and pre having a TV in the house.

Going to West Park, I normally caught the 39 near the Bird I’th Hand and stayed on until Earlestown, but my chums told me of this record shop on Ormskirk Street, which is where I spent it on G.I. Blues. I had seen the film at the Curzon with my mum and I knew she loved Elvis. It wasn’t really the rebel image, but it was what I wanted.

Before she died, my mum’s favourite record was I Feel Like I’m Fixing To Die by Country Joe and the Fish. I guess that’s why my music taste is eclectic and wanders round so many genres, and why I have over a thousand CDs collected over 30 years (I sold my vinyl and replaced them with CDs, including G.I. Blues). I wonder if today’s kids will remember their first download purchase?
