THE OWNER of a popular Indian restaurant has issued a response to the low food hygiene rating it received on its latest inspection.

As previously reported by the Star, the Blue Mango restaurant and takeaway was hit with a one-star food hygiene rating from its inspection last month.

The low rating came as a shock to readers as the Dane Court business is extremely popular across the borough, and is rated as the second-best restaurant in Rainhill on Trip Advisor.

The business was also highly commended during the pandemic after it delivered 100 free meals to isolating Rainhill residents and cooked 100 free meals for NHS staffers at Whiston Hospital.

Food hygiene ratings are given to businesses after an inspector from the local authority assesses how well they comply with food safety laws.

The rating reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of the inspection by the inspector, who often turns up unannounced.

Inspected on April 13, the Blue Mango was given a one-out-of-five food hygiene score after major improvements were reported to be necessary for the business' management of food safety.

Improvements were also reported to be necessary for the business' hygienic food handling, as well as for the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building.

Following the disappointing rating, Blue Mango owner Ryan Meah issued a response on social media.

He said: "Dear loyal customers of Blue Mango Indian Restaurant, you may have seen some negative publicity about our restaurant on social media recently but I wanted to reassure you that we take all aspects of health and hygiene very seriously and we we have unfortunately fell short in only a couple of minor areas.

"Rest assured, we will be taking both corrective and preventative measures in the coming days and weeks so that we can continue to provide you with our delicious Asian cuisine.

"Sadly nobody is perfect and I thank you all in advance for your understanding and support."

Many residents said that they will continue to support Ryan and the Blue Mango team despite the one-star rating, while others were more cautious and said they will wait to see if the business improves its hygiene score.

Following a disappointing food hygiene rating, a business owner can appeal the decision to the local authority or request a reinspection when they are confident that the necessary hygiene improvements have been made.
